Mississippi State Fires Head Football Coach Zach Arnett

Former Defensive Coordinator Relieved of Duties After One Season

Arnett's Record Underwhelms, Leading to Dismissal

Mississippi State University has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season, the school announced Monday. Arnett, who took over the program following the tragic death of Mike Leach in December 2022, led the Bulldogs to a disappointing 4-6 record in 2023.

Arnett previously served as Mississippi State's defensive coordinator for three seasons. He was promoted to head coach after Leach's passing, but was unable to maintain the success of his predecessor.

Mississippi State's lone SEC win in 2023 came against Arkansas, a 7-3 slog. The Bulldogs' signature win was a victory over Arizona, currently ranked No. 19 in the nation.

Arnett's firing comes after a 51-10 defeat to Texas A&M, which dropped the Bulldogs to 4-6 on the season.

Mississippi State will now begin a national search for its next head football coach.

Arnett's dismissal is the latest in a string of coaching changes in the SEC. Auburn, Florida, and Texas A&M have all made coaching changes in recent weeks.
